Guide to Living Donation Sign-up

Updated: Feb 3, 2023

Answers to Your Questions.

I'll maintain this page as a running Q/A forum, so please keep me posted with your questions / comments.

You can email me directly at carolyn@nckidney.com

What information is Carolyn privy to?

Short answer: hardly any.

Long answer from Duke: The recipient is not privileged to much of what happens on the evaluating donors side unless that prospective donor chooses to share it.

So, please subscribe to the site to stay updated on my search for a kidney! Any information you provide is helpful for me to understand the reach of this website and to estimate how many folks have signed up. However, this is completely voluntary, and I will not share any information you share with me.

I filled out the form... now what?

Duke will contact you via email or phone, so please check your voicemail and email (including spam folder) on a regular basis once you sign up. Again, I am not privvy to what these emails or discussions entail. For further information on the process, please contact Duke Donor Services directly at 855-855-6484 or visit

From Duke: "Any person looking to be evaluated to donate will be contacted by the living donor nurse coordinator (who only interacts with potential donors) when it is time to be evaluated."

I was told that my application would not be evaluated at this time... now what?

Please reach out to a coordinator (whoever emailed you) or call 855-855-6484 to ask for additional information to inquire about the status of your application and their projected timeline for its review, as often they are batched and evaluated in groups.

Until a match is found, I continue to ask folks to sign up and be evaluated even though it may take a little time to get your application reviewed and your evaluation scheduled. Thank you!
