As the Super Bowl Festivities draw to a close, and we begin to focus on what to do for Valentine's Day, consider signing up to be an organ donor!
Valentine's Day is not only National Donor Day, but this entire week is National Organ Donation Week! A time to share ourselves with those we love, and an opportunity to share our organs -- the ultimate show of love -- with those we may not even know.
The beauty of kidney donation is that you can decide today to share your organ with someone in need. You can get to know the person whose life you saved.
This Valentine's Week, I'm humbled by the love near and far -- from my beloved family and friends to friends from long ago to strangers reaching out to sign up and show their support. I'm amazed at the number of strangers who have offered to donate their kidney to me, but they already donated to someone else. Out of the sheer kindness of their hearts.
I've never been one to share a lot about my medical status. But, this 'opening up' has enlightened me to not only the immunological wonders of transplant, but the human wonders of the world. Thank you all for being such kind and beautiful people -- to me and to others. It not only makes me hopeful for my own search for a kidney. It also makes me hopeful for our society writ large.
Happy Valentine's Day to you and yours. And Happy Donation Week to you all to. May you be showered with love from near and far, and thank you for extending your love, and potentially your kidney, to me.
Love, this week and always, Carolyn
